南，大河之南也。黄河九曲婉转，出得太行，与渭河泾河相汇，顿时波澜壮阔，迤俪向东。从黄土高原挟裹而来的沃土使黄河成为名副其实的母亲河。
中华文明的历史源自农耕文化，故而这一段黄河流域成为中华文明的摇篮。
有史可考的夏朝主要在河南禹州一带，随后的殷商主要在安阳鹤壁一带。周朝一度西迁至关中，但河南区域依然是中华文化政治的中心，燕、韩、魏、郑、赵等大国均在河南区域。相比而言，楚、秦、吴、越等显得后起。在封建制下的东周国君亦将首都从关中迁至洛阳，使河南继续着中华的中心地位。
